The Learner’s Dictionary has very simple and concise definitions in basic English. This dictionary also has numerous usage examples of the words searched to give the reader a variety of ways to understand the meaning and usage of the word. This is a good option for students that are just starting to use a dictionary or for English learners. This site has a search box and will give students a shortened definition of the word. There is also a quiz section and a word or phrase of the day section. I appreciate that the word of the day is appropriate for the comprehension of students compared to the other dictionaries I’ve also reviewed.
I searched the word “gymnastics” and found a few adequate definitions of the word that are straight to the point and then the word is used in various sentences to further my understanding of the word.
I am a bit disappointed by how distracting this site is. For younger students or students just starting to use the dictionary, you need minimal distractions. They need to focus on what they came to the website to accomplish instead of being distracted by advertisements and lots of small print on the page. This site could improve by using real photographs and examples. They could also add an option for students to hear the definitions read aloud. I see a need for this type of website and if done right, you could use it beginning with students in Pre-K.
