On the Fact Monster website there is an option to search the encyclopedia. When you select the encyclopedia tab it states that the search gives you access to over 57,000 articles from the Colombia Encyclopedia, sixth edition. This is a free website and seems user friendly. Students will like the ease of switching from encyclopedia to dictionary, thesaurus, almanac, atlas and timelines. There is a lot of information and functionality in one place. This site is also full of advertisements and students will need to be cautious not to click on those when using the website. There are also many games advertised on the website and I can see this distracting students trying to complete research or work on an assignment. I noticed that the articles are written at a high difficulty and would be most appropriate for upper elementary and on. The pre-set search options are great for students that are not quite sure of what they want to look up. Students will also enjoy the photo galleries included in many searches. This website has an icon that says, “cite this page,” but I find it lacking. It merely gives directions for how to cite different articles and sources. I am comparing this to the Britannica encyclopedia that not only cited the source for you, but also allowed you to select the format in which you wanted to use. Overall, this is a good free resource for students to use when researching and wanting to find out more about a specific topic, but I would suggest other options before suggesting this one to students and teachers.
